Wave-Cradled and Wind-Caressed: 150 Years of Art on Appledore Island

  • The Parlor at The Hotel Thaxter 15 Middle Street Portsmouth, NH, 03801 United States (map)

Experience new perspectives on Appledore Island’s primal beauty and history with this 30-minute introduction to the creativity it has inspired from the 1850s to the present day. Meet the nautical artists who painted Appledore first; learn why Celia Thaxter renamed Childe Hassam when he joined her 1880s “salon;” view the work of 21st century artists in the Shoals Marine Lab’s Artist in Residence (AIR) program, ongoing since 2017. This colorful slide show and discussion comprises, along the way, a veritable mini history of American landscape painting.

In conjunction with “Appledore Revisited: Cigar Box Painting Returns to Celia’s Salon,” a benefit exhibition by SML Artist-in-Residence (AIR) artists at Portsmouth’s Hotel Thaxter, featuring contemporary cigar box paintings and framed studio works all either painted on or inspired by Appledore Island (info at www.appledorerevisited.com)

Free to attend. Registration required. Space is limited!
